Building Materials Sales Clerk

The counter (inside) sales position is responsible for ensuring customers that visit or call our stores receive outstanding service throughout the sales process. Responsibilities include understanding customer needs, knowing our products and inventory, matching the right products with customer needs, processing sales transactions from stock inventory and special orders, and handling a variety of other customer inquiries and requests. The objective is to ensure the customer leaves PF every time satisfied and with a good impression of PF’s level of customer service. 

Essential Job Duties:

  • Customer Service
  • Greet customers (or answer phone calls) promptly
  • Ask effective questions to identify and qualify customer needs
  • Identify additional “unknown” needs or opportunities for add-on sales
  • Establish strong working relationships with customers
  • Handle all phone calls and customer requests promptly and efficiently
  • Orders
  • Inquiries for other salespersons or departments
  • Customer service or product quality problems
  • Delivery schedules
  • Work closely with yard, dispatch, outside sales, K&B, S&D and other staff to provide seamless, great service to customers
  • Follow up with customers promptly
  • Quotes
  • Special orders received not yet delivered and invoiced
  • Returning phone calls
  • Make sure customer leaves PF satisfied with a “good experience”
  • Develop strong customer relationships
  • Present a positive image for customers (courteous and friendly, well groomed, appropriate work apparel)
  • Point of Sale system basics
  • Basic navigation and functions
  • Customer codes
  • Inventory codes and descriptions
  • Process sales transactions accurately, in compliance with PF policies for pricing, discounts, payment and credit memo terms Correct information – all transactions

  • Charge sales (customer pick-up)

  • Assist with stock receiving and put-away
  • Assist with inventory cycle counts
  • Notify purchasing of potential inventory shortages, quality problems, etc.
  • Market pricing feedback for purchasing and store manager
  • Know where to get the inventory
  • Stock – local store
  • Stock – transfer orders from other locations
  • Special orders (building products, kitchen and bath, sash and door)
  • Products (and how they are used) in inventory

  • Referrals to preferred alternate sources for product lines not carried by PF
  • Referrals to preferred contractor customers of PF
  • Identify potential referrals for outside sales, K&B and S&D

  • Maintain clean and organized store
  • Clean and face products on shelves and displays
  • Bin labeling
  • Store housekeeping – daily (floors, shelves, counters, parking area)
